SUMMARY
Reporting to the CFO. The Director of Tax is a senior finance leader responsible for setting and executing the overall tax strategy for Associated Feed & Supply Co. and related entities. This role oversees all tax compliance while serving as a strategic advisor to executive leadership on tax planning, structuring, and risk management related to operations, capital investments, asset transactions, and growth initiatives. The position is based in the Turlock office and works closely with the CFO, accounting leadership, and external advisors.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Tax Strategy & Planning (Primary Focus)
- Lead the development and execution of enterprise-wide tax strategy aligned with business objectives.
- Evaluate tax implications of asset sales, acquisitions, entity structuring, financing arrangements, and intercompany transactions.
- Advise executive leadership on tax-efficient capital allocation, investment decisions, and long-term planning.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and assess impacts to the organization.
- Serve as the primary internal authority on complex tax matters and judgmental tax positions.
- Oversee all federal, state, and local tax compliance for multiple legal entities (partnerships, LLCs, corporations).
- Ensure accurate and timely filing of income tax returns, sales and use tax, property tax, payroll tax, and other indirect taxes.
- Review and approve significant tax filings and positions; ensure appropriate documentation and support.
- Manage relationships with external tax advisors and ensure work is aligned with internal strategy.
- Oversee preparation and review of quarterly and annual income tax provisions in accordance with GAAP.
- Ensure appropriate tax reserves, disclosures, and documentation are maintained.
- Lead tax-related audit support and manage interactions with taxing authorities.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate tax risks across the organization.
- Establish and maintain strong tax controls, processes, and governance.
- Drive continuous improvement in tax processes, reporting, and data quality.
- Partner on ERP and system initiatives impacting tax reporting and compliance.
- Develop internal tax capabilities and provide guidance to accounting and finance teams.
- Act as a strategic partner to the CFO and senior leadership on business initiatives.
- Collaborate closely with accounting, treasury, payroll, and operations teams.
- Support special projects and strategic initiatives as requested by executive leadership.
- Perform related duties and/or special projects as assigned
Knowledge of:
- Progressive tax
- Public accounting
- Senior corporate tax leadership
- Deep knowledge of federal and state income taxation and indirect taxes.
- Demonstrated experience leading tax strategy in a multi‑entity environment.
- Have strong business judgment, executive presence, and ability to influence senior stakeholders.
- Work on‑site in a collaborative office environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 10+ years of progressive tax experience, including public accounting and senior corporate tax leadership.
- CPA, MST, or JD.
- Experience in agriculture, manufacturing, distribution, or asset‑intensive businesses.
- Experience supporting mergers, acquisitions, asset sales, and complex financing structures.
- Familiarity with ERP implementations and tax process automation.

On‑site role in Turlock, CA; regular in‑person collaboration with executive and finance leadership. Periodic extended hours during major transactions, tax deadlines, and audit periods. High visibility role with direct exposure to ownership and senior leadership.
